The 1998 29th annual Eastern Mid Winter Sale drew the largest crowd ever at the Virginia Horse Center. A record crowd of over 6,500 people attended the sale held on January 24 & 25 at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Virginia. The sale average remained at record levels despite an increase in the numbers of horse offered. The sale averaged $3,072.06, an increase of one percent (1%) from the 1997 sale and within one dollar of the 1996 sale's record high average. "This is the best sale I have ever been to and I have never seen a crowd this big at any other horse sale." said Tim Jennings, Vice President of Professional Auction Services, Inc. "Every horse in here brought top dollar." Gross sales for the weekend broke the previous record by thirteen percent (13%) topping out at $1,019,925.00. The number of horses actually sold surged twenty percent (20%) with 332 horses actually selling.
The Eastern Mid Winter Sale is one of the strongest show horse sales in the country. "Buyers can find more show horses and prospects here that at any sale in the country except the World Championship Quarter Horse Show Sale." stated Jennings. "We are proud of the fact that horses sold through this sale ring in the last few years have gone on to earn an AQHA World Championship, an APHA World Championship and several wins at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress." Of the horses that passed through the sale ring, 105 had either show, sire or produce record and averaged $4,366.86.
The weekend kicked off with a 'Welcome Party' held on Friday night sponsored by Professional Auction Services, Inc. The sale also featured a large trade show with thirty tack shops and trailer dealers. Sale Horses were shown at performance demonstrations each morning before they sold.
A special session was added for Cutting Horses and Team Penners. These horses were sold as they were shown on cattle on Sunday morning. Horses that were shown on cattle averaged $3,390.48
