A record crowd of well over 5,000 people attended the 28th annual Eastern Mid Winter Sale held on January 25 & 26 at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Virginia. The sale average remained at record levels despite an increase in the numbers of yearlings offered. The sale averaged $3,043, a drop of one percent (1%) from the 1996 sale's record high. "Overall, this is the strongest market I have ever seen." said Tim Jennings, Vice President of Professional Auction Services, Inc. "Top to bottom, there was a great demand for all types of horses." The sale also featured a large trade show with thirty tack shops, trailer dealers.

The Eastern Mid Winter Sale is one of the strongest show horse sales in the country. "Buyers can find more show horses and prospects here that at any sale in the country except the World Championship Quarter Horse Show Sale." stated Jennings. "We are proud of the fact that horses sold through this sale ring in the last few years have gone on to earn an AQHA World Championship, an APHA World Championship and a win at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress." Of the horses that passed through the sale ring, 107 horses had either show, sire or produce record, averaged $4,337.24.

The demand for Paints continues to be very strong. The Paints sold at the Eastern Mid Winter sale averaged $3,183.33. Paint Breeding Stockhorses (solid color paints) averaged $2,181.25.

Sale Horses were shown at three performance demonstrations throughout the weekend. The first was held on Friday night with a preview party. Show horses were also presented each morning prior to the Sale.

A new session was added for Cutting Horses and Team Penners. These horses were sold as they were shown on cattle on Sunday morning. Horses that were shown on cattle averaged $3,497.37.
