The 1998 Raleigh
Spring Sale

A record crowd estimated at 4,000 people attended the Raleigh Spring Sale, held February 28, 1998 at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. For the second year in a row, the sale featured an AQHA Leading Sire, COOSA LAD. The ten year old son of Coosa and Reserve World Champion Mare Johnette Skip, was an AQHA All-Time Leading Sire of Halter ROM qualifiers and an Equistat Leading Sire of Halter and Pleasure Money Earners.
COOSA LAD topped the sale selling for $262,000.00. He was purchased by Christine and Mac Cadaret of Cazevonia, New York and will stand in North Carolina with Mike Hay. Coosa Lad was the property of the United States Government at the time of the sale. He had been seized by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division.
The circumstances surrounding the sale of the stallion required that he be sold at public auction. "The government has had a lot of experience in liquidating seized assets. They know that the best way to do that is to sell at public auction." said Tim Jennings, Vice President of Professional Auction Services, Inc. "The Thoroughbred industry has known this for a century and it looks like we starting to understand it in the Quarter Horse and Paint industries."
The second High Selling Horse was Coo Obvious, a double registered AQHA and APHA stallion. He was also a son of Coosa and was an APHA Superior Halter Horse. Coo Obvious sold for $30,500.00 to Derek Chojnowski of Wynnewood, Oklahoma and was sold by David Jackson of Keyser, West Virginia.
The sale averaged $5,280 on horses actually sold. "This was a great sale." Jennings stated "Taking the high selling stallion out of the average, it still averaged $3,175 on the other 122 horses that actually sold. That ranks it, for the second year in a row, among the best sales in the country."
The sale which was held during the Southeastern Reining Horse Association Spring Celebration Reining. Thirty four Reining Horses, prospects and breeding horses were entered in the sale. The average for these horses was strong at $4,234 with eighty six percent (86%) of the Reiners offered selling to new homes.
The Raleigh Spring Sale was managed by Professional Auction Services, Inc. of Leesburg, Virginia. Professional Auction Services, Inc. was founded in 1978 by Mike Jennings and Tim Jennings and has managed nearly 130 Horse Auctions with sales of over $50,000,000.00.
