The 1998 Eastern
Spring Sale
A record sale price was set at the 27th Annual Eastern Spring Sale, held on Saturday, April 18, 1998 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Maryland. A capacity crowd fell silent as Hip Number 14 entered the sale ring. The horse was Obvious Cash, a three-time Congress winner, three-time AQHA Reserve World Champion Stallion and AQHA High Point Sr. Halter Stallion. When the bidding was complete, auctioneer Mike Jennings called the horse sold for $59,500 to Keith and Sharon Fiester of New Jersey. Obvious Cash was consigned by Circle K Ranch of Walton, New York. The 13 year old son of Obvious Conclusion had earned 214 Open Halter points.
The sale averaged $2,678.88 on horses actually sold. "This was the best Spring Sale we have had in years." Mike Jennings stated "The bidding was very active and nearly every horse here brought fair value in the sale ring." Most of the horses offered for sale found new owners with 82% of the horse actually selling. Quarter Horses led the way averaging $3,148.65 while Paints averaged $1,874.58. Buyers came from fourteen states and Canada.
The Eastern Spring Hunter Sale was held on Sunday following the Eastern Spring Sale. A record for average sale price was set at the Third Annual Eastern Spring Hunter Sale, held on Sunday, April 19, 1998 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Maryland. The rainy weather throughout the Demonstration of Sale Horses and the Sale did not dampen the bidding. The sale averaged $2,315.38 on horses and ponies actually sold.
